Best to focus on the good

ROWENA RYAN | October 1 2008 | The Sydney Morning Herald & The Age (subscribe)

What was your first job?

I worked at Grace Bros in Bondi Junction in the toy department.

What did you get paid?

I can't recall, but I was 14 at the time so it wouldn't have been much!

Are you a saver or a spender?

A bit of both. When I was younger I used to like to buy antiques and paintings. I suppose I was investing in a minor way.

What do you spend your money on?

Horses.

How do you save?

I re-invest into my business.

What was your worst purchase?

There have been numerous, both in fashion and in horses. I try to forget them and focus on the good ones.

Credit cards are: a) great. b) helpful. c) a poor investment. d) work of the devil.

Work of the devil.

Why?

People overspend.

Does budgeting work for you?

I try to keep a budget but sometimes I slightly exceed it.

What's the best piece of investment advice you have heard?

Bruce Mathieson told me to invest in property.

What's the best piece of investment advice you have actually acted upon?

Too numerous to mention. I'm constantly open to investment advice.

If I was given $20,000 I would buy ...

A wardrobe from David Jones and a Christmas holiday.

If I was given $20,000 I would invest in ...

The sharemarket.
